Describe the Books: Let's see...It is the story of a farming family in Southern Appalachia. The Prequels "Walking the Water" and "Watching the Land", deal with how the Family began in the 1880's, then migrated to the logging camps of Wisconsin. Morgan and Amy find an unfamiliar land rife with dangers and ruthless camp bosses, as well as a love that will survive almost despite itself. When Morgan decides to come South to farm in the North Georgia foothills, his brother Kevin and his Jewish friend, Eli also bring their families. The land beside the Soque River, near the little town of Dooley, divulges a whole different cavalcade of characters and lifestyles, as well as bringing the three families shattering losses, joys, and the chaos of raising houses full of children. "Two Houses" is written from the standpoint of 17 year old Brynn McKenna as she tries to keep her family of siblings together after the death of her parents in their home, Old House. The books roll on from there. Through marriages, WWI, children, love, death, betrayal and joy, the Family hangs on, hangs together, and carries on. And it is never boring....sort of like your life, too. | First off, you have to understand, these books have been written for years. The first story about the McKennas was written in 1972, and since then, they have grown and grown. All written in long hand, on yellow legal tablets, they were stored in the basement of a house (mine) in the North Georgia hills while they continued to be added to. Then in 2012, "Two Houses" was published, mostly just to get it out of the basement, and people bought it...really bought it...and wanted more. |
