Brynn McKenna and Jackson Flynn; a complicated story I guess. I won't go into the story line in case you don't know it, but just want to delve a little into Brynn's quandary when it comes to Jackson.
The problem is that Jackson is rather...how should I put this?...complicated. He's had a quirky, sad growing up and when he sees the McKennas, way back when Morgan and Amy first came to Dooley, he sees the Family he wishes he had. He sees a sort of parallel to his own family and wants to be included.
He doesn't know this, you understand. He just likes the McKennas as a whole, and Brynn in particular. For years, he drifts around them as an acquaintance, then as more than just an acquaintance, and then suddenly...he's in.
Brynn, on the other hand, sees Jackson in a fond light. She's grateful to him, attracted to him, and is a little guilty about using him. Does she use him? Or is it the real thing?
And then, although she had been told time and again that his past was murky, she is appalled to find that it actually was. And to find that he lied. By omission, you understand, but it was still lying. And it was a rather serious lie, too. Not one she could overlook.
All right, so Jackson cleared that lie up. There is peace again. But there are other lies that Brynn never knows about, but only suspects. And unfortunately, she sees Jackson Flynn in his daughter, Torrance.
From the beginning, Brynn doesn't trust Torrance, and Torrance knows it. Brynn doesn't realize she is doing this; she doesn't realize that Torrance doesn't deserve the disapproval that flows from Brynn. And, the fact is that Torrance is very much like Jackson. The fact is that Torrance rather likes not being trusted.
In normal human perversity, Torrance takes Brynn's suspicious nature toward her and does three things: first, she bewails it to gain sympathy; second, she proves Brynn right as much as she can; and third, she blames Brynn for forcing her to fulfill her expectations.
Such are teenagers.
And just exactly how could Brynn have felt otherwise about the girl? Jackson's secrets came home to roost in his daughter. Unfortunately for Brynn, he isn't around to deal with them.
And such is life.
